SAICA Trainee Accountant Program:
The purpose of the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) program is to provide our handpicked SAICA trainees with the relevant experience and competencies needed to qualify as efficient and competent accountants at the end of their 3-year training contract. This is attained by rotating trainees, for 6 to 8 months at a time, into business areas across the Bank that are able to provide the appropriate training.
We place your professional and personal development at the forefront of your journey as an Absa SAICA trainee, with technical and soft skill training underpinning your day-to-day job. As a trainee, your growth will be further cemented by coaching, mentoring, conference attendance and participation with the wider Absa Graduate Program (Gen A) on an array of learning programs.
Our Executive Committee (Exco) is fully supportive of our trainees and take pride in your growth and achievement. For this reason, each quarter, an Exco member will host a Trainee engagement session where you will have the opportunity to network with the Leadership of the Bank. With your involvement with your peers on the Gen A program, you will be able to seize each networking opportunity, at all levels, across the Bank. Absa will provide financial assistance for exam fees, tuition for the SAICA board exams to better equip you with the knowledge and skills that are fundamental to pass. This is further complemented by generous study leave benefits that are specific to the program.
Once you have successfully completed the 3 years of practical experience and the SAICA exams, you will qualify as well rounded Chartered Accountants (South Africa) (CA (SA)) with an exciting career trajectory.
Entry criteria:
We encourage you to apply for the program if you are currently enrolled for an Honors degree in the Certificate in the Theory of Accounting (CTA).
The CIMA Trainee Accountant Program:
The purpose of the Absa Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) program is to provide our handpicked CIMA trainees with the relevant experience and competencies needed to qualify as efficient and competent accountants at the end of their 3-year training contract. Entry criteria:
We encourage you to apply for the program if you are currently enrolled for an Honors degree (or higher) in Financial Management that will provide you with exemptions for the CIMA Managerial level (objective tests P2, F2 & E2).
- Applicants must be South African citizens, currently at an accredited university or planning to enter tertiary education in the following year.
- Undergraduate students must have achieved a minimum average of 70% in their latest academic year.
Applicants should be studying to complete a Bachelor’s degree in one of the following disciplines:

- Statistics

Gen A Actuarial Analyst
WIMI (Wealth Investment Management and Insurance) offers actuarial professionals the most diverse career opportunities across the Absa group, spanning life insurance, general insurance, pensions and health care consulting, investments, HR analytics, banking (corporate, retail, private, business and investment), big data and analytics, enterprise risk management, exposure to Rest of African entities etc. We have several actuaries at Executive level across the bank’s divisions. Our actuarial offering in terms of study policy, work ethic, remuneration and career planning is second to none and is constantly monitored to ensure dynamic competitiveness. As part of the BAGL group, we receive generous benefits such as discounted finance for vehicles and homes, free bank accounts, ABSA rewards, etc. With just about 100 actuarial employees, inclusive of 20 qualified actuaries, there is no shortage of career guidance, sharing, exam support and networking opportunities to help you optimise your career. Gen A Risk Analyst:
Risk professionals evaluate, monitor and track the risks we face as an organisation. As our business and the world evolve and develop so do these risks. As a bank it is imperative to respond to these risks in order to support and protect our business, customers and clients.
Graduates will be part of an 18 month programme entering into a risk function. Graduates will have a chance to work across various teams, not fulfilling a specific role within the risk function, being part of a separate unit known as the Risk Rotation Lab. The overall objective of the role is to provide graduates with a broader understanding of a risk appetite; develop technical job related skills across principal and key risks; get to know different team members and place graduates in the team best suited for their skill set.
Gen A Global Markets Analyst:
et a broad set of skills by rotating across different Markets Trading and Sales desks throughout the 18-month programme. Based on your preference and business needs you could rotate across a selection of these areas within Global Markets: Fixed Income, Equities, Foreign Exchange, Structuring, Credit, QA, and Prime. You have the opportunity to get exposure to the growing African market in which we operate. You will be allocated a buddy to assist and guide you throughout the programme.
You are wanting to work in a dynamic environment that will give you exposure to a network of professionals who will help guide and enable your career progression. You want to be part of a structured development programme that will connect you to graduates from across the continent giving you the skills to be self-empowered and cross-culturally competent. You will master the art of a design mindset whilst applying novel and adaptive thinking that will prepare you for the future world of work.
Internship: Industrial and Organisational Psychology:
The Industrial and Organisational Psychology internship is a one year programme, accredited with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). The aim of the programme is to upskill M.Com Industrial Psychology students towards registering as an Industrial Psychologist (Independent Practice).
The programme includes six domains, which consists of:
Organisational psychology;
Human resource (personnel) psychology;
Career psychology and employee wellness/wellbeing;
Testing and assessment;
Elective (project) and;
Professional ethics.
Interns are required to complete 260 days of the programme, completing all the domains, within the 12 months (1 year) period. Interns will be assigned to two supervisors, an internal senior Industrial Psychologist within the organisation and an external Industrial Psychologist from a recognized academic institution.
During the internship, interns will be evaluated on a logbook and quarterly reports; adding value to the organisation as well as the industry of Industrial Psychology.
