Landing an internship for your summer holidays can be the opportunity of a lifetime. It’s your chance to learn new skills, get to know the industry you want to work in, and make a good impression on your potential future employer. But if you don’t have much experience working in an office environment, how do you make your summer internship count?
It’s understandable that you might feel nervous or uncertain about how to make the most of an opportunity like this. You might be surprised to learn that it’s often not so much about demonstrating your technical skills. It’s about showing your willingness to learn, grow and stand out – authentically.
Here are my top 7 tips for making your summer internship count:
- Show up – even if it’s online
Whether you’re logging in from your desk or walking into an office, presence Be on time, turn your camera on when you can, and bring energy and positive vibes. - Ask questions
You’re not expected to know everything, but curiosity shows initiative. Ask whythings are done a certain way, not just That’s how you grasp concepts faster. - Learn the business
It’s easy to get stuck in your project bubble – but the best interns take time to understand how the company actually works. Who are the clients? How does money move? Where does your role fit in? - Build relationships
Internships are short, but networks last a lifetime! Introduce yourself, connect on LinkedIn, ask mentors and seniors about their career journey. Future-you will thank you. - Keep a learning log/ journal
Each day, jot down what you learned, what challenged you and what surprised you. It’ll make your final reflection (and your CV update) a breeze! - Ask for feedback
Don’t wait for the last day – check in mid-way (where possible and applicable). “What’s working well? What could I improve?” These two questions indicates maturity and a growth mindset. - Leave a legacy
Wrap up your project neatly, share your insights and send a thank-you note to your mentor or manager. You want them to remember you for being capable, curious and kind.
